Margherita pizza was conceived in honour of Queen Margherita, of Italy. Homemade pizza base topped with pomodoro sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil and oregano served in Sorrento Italian Dining in Taupo. The colours of the toppings symbolize the flag of Italy, which is red, white and green.
This delicious homemade pizza base comes with a tomato sauce base, red onion, kalamata olives, feta, with basil on top. This pizza can also be made vegan or gluten free if you let us know when placing your order!

Remember – the most important starting point is the dough and the preparation process.
Here is the basic dough recipe – it makes 4 pizza bases:
4 teaspoons yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 & 3/4 cups warm water
4 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon sea salt
And olive oil for oiling the bowl
- In a small bowl combine the yeast, sugar and warm water and mix well. Leave it for 5-10 minutes.
- Sift the flour and salt into another bowl, and make a well in the centre. Pour the wet yeast mixture into the flour mixture and form into a dough with your hands.
- Place the dough into a clean, lightly oiled larger sized bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Leave to rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size and puffed up.
- Remove dough from the bowl and knead for 2-3 minutes, then quarter the dough and shape into you r pizza bases.
